Foodie Friday: The Super Berries

Category : Foodie Friday, Life and Health Insurance

The warm weather is finally here and that means more berry stands are coming out from the shadows. Berries are one of my favorite foods, not only do they have a natural sweetness but they are one of the best foods to eat. But do you know what each berry has to offer you health wise? Well now is my times, as your California health insurance agent, to share why you should be eating these power packed berries.

1. Raspberries: These ruby red berries are sweet with a hint of tang and are filled with flavonoids. These flavonoids help counter cell damage in the, are high in vitamin C, and produce fiber, folate, iron, and potassium.

2. Blueberries: Although small, these blue berries contain a high dosage of antioxidants, which help reduce inflammation and can help curb the growth of cancer cells. Blueberries have also been known to protect against some intestinal upsets and urinary tract infections.

3. Blackberries: Although just as healthy as the other berries, I find I eat less blackberries than the others, but after finding out how healthy they are I think I should eat more. Like all berries, blackberries are rich in antioxidants and rank among the healthiest fruits. They are not only high in fiber, but low in calories. They provide a great amount of vitamin C, flavonoids, folate, vitamin E, iron, and calcium.

4. Strawberries: Like its berry friends, strawberries are high in vitamin C, antioxidants, fiber, folate, potassium, and low in calories.

5. Goji Berries: These are one type of berry I have not tried, and I don’t know why. The goji berry has been used to treating diabetes, hypertension, malaria, fever, cancer, and other ailments. It is also high in vitamin C and beta-carotene.

6. Acai Berry: These deep purple berries are known to combat free radicals, help slow signs of aging, support the immune system and healthy skin.

Since we are on the subject of berries, it only makes sense for our Foodie Friday recipe to contain berries. So I took a recipe from onegreenplanet.org that I would like to make, and share it will all of you. I hope you enjoy these nutrient rich Goji Energy Bites.

10 Ways To Help Save The Planet From Your Ca Business Insurance Agency

Category : Business Insurance, Tips

The official Earth Day may have already passed but that doesn’t mean you can’t care for the earth every day. At John E. Peakes Insurance Agency, your California Business insurance agency, we want you to love and care about the earth as much as we do. That is why we are sharing 10 out of 50 tips help the planet.

photo from greenenergyme.org

1. Turn computers off at night: this will save about 40 watt-hours per day, which adds up to 4 cents a day or $14 per year.

2. Don’t rise: Skip the rinsing before using your dishwasher. This will save up to 20 gallons of water each dish load. In addition to saving water, you are also saving time and energy used to heat the water.

3. Diaper with a conscience: By the time your child is toilet trained, a parent will have created approximately 3.5 million tons of waste, which is dumped in the U.S. landfills each year. Instead of producing this waste, use a more environmental friendly diaper, or even better, a cloth one.

4. Hang Dry: This will not only save the energy the dryer uses dry a load, your clothes will also maintain their color longer and you will save money.

5. Rethink your bath time: If you are a frequent bath taker, try taking them less frequently or not at all, and shower instead. Not only will you reduce water consumption, but you will cut down the energy cost that is used to heat up all the water.

6. Get creative with your wrapping: Instead of buying the fun colored wrapping paper, save paper by reusing gift bags, newspaper, brown paper bags, maps and so on.

7. Turn the water off when brushing your teeth: You may have heard this many times, yet you still leave the water running when you don’t need it to be. If you turn it off while brushing your teeth you could conserve up to five gallons of water per day.

8. Plant a tree: Planting a tree is good for the air, the land, and the shade it provides your home will cut your cooling costs saving you money and energy.

9. Set your car to cruise control: When your car is set to cruise control  you could save up to 15% better gas mileage. This not only helps the environment but keeps more money in your wallet too.

10. Use cotton swabs with a paperboard spindle: Some cotton swabs are made with paper board spindles while other are made of plastic. If 10% of cotton swab buyers were to switch to paper board spindles the petroleum energy saved per year would add up to over 150,000 gallons of gasoline.

There you have it, ten ways to help the planet. But the list doesn’t stop at 10, find out the 40 other ways to help save the planet and make it a plan to make the small changes. As your California Business Insurance agency, we want to make sure the planet is taken care of just like many of you do. Go Green!

Feel the Flue or a Cold Coming On? Ease The Symptoms With This 21 and Over Drink Remedy

Category : Healthy Recipes, Life and Health, Life and Health Insurance

A cold or the flu can hit a person fast and hard. That was the case with my boyfriend last night. As soon as he got home, my boyfriend headed straight for the couch, and explained to me that he was not feeling well. As the night went on, his symptoms got worse and around 9 pm he was achey, had a headache, as well as a sore throat. After giving him some vitamin C and another homeopathic remedy I like to use I remembered what his co-worker, who was just getting over the flu, told me really helped her feel better: a Hot Tottie.

I had never made a Hot Tottie, so of course I had to find out what ingredients were used to make one. Before I decided to give him this cold remedy, which actually has not been proven to help a cold or flu, I wanted to know why these ingredients were used. This is what I found:

Ingredients used for Hot Tottie and their benefits from John E. Peakes Insurance Agency:

photo from ellenfork.com

Hot water: although there is no research showing hot water, or other hot liquids, help a cold any more than cold liquids; hot liquids provide relaxation and ease the chills you may be experiencing from your cold or flue. The warm liquids also help sooth an irritated sore throat you may experience when sick.

Honey: 1 tablespoon of honey is used in this cold soothing drink. Research has found that honey may reduce a cough by coating and soothing and irritated throat. It is also found to reduce the cough itself.

Lemon: squeeze a quarter of lemon juice into the hot water. Lemon juice is not only high in Vitamin C but it also decreases the toxicity of the virus in the body.

2 ounces of Brandi or Whisky: now I couldn’t find any research or health benefits of the alcohol in this drink. But I can only assume that it will help ease the pain of the sore throat and bring on relaxation and a better sleep. I can not prove this, it is only my guess.

Tea: using tea in your Hot Tottie is optional. When I made it, last night, I decided to steep sleepy time tea in the water before adding the other ingredients. I did this in hopes it would help my boyfriend relax and sleep well.

This is no miracle drink, but it did help my boyfriend fall asleep earlier than he usually does and he was able to sleep through the night. When working in close proximity with other people, passing around the cold and flu is quite common. Do your best to prevent catching a cold or flu by making regular visits to your doctor, using your California health insurance from John E. Peakes Insurance Agency, to maintain your health.

It Is A Reality: The Faces Lost To Distracted Driving

Category : Driving Safety, Peakes Insurance

As a California insurance agency, we are aware of all the different types of causes for automobiles accidents, and one of the main causes is distracted driving.

from teenmemorywall.com

The other day I saw this video that had a very serious impact on me. The video about Eric Okerblom, a 19 year old boy, who was killed on July  25th, 2009 when a driver traveling 60 mph struck him on his bike. The cell phone records verify the driver was texting while driving.

This month is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and as your California Insurance Agency, we want to make sure you and your children know the seriousness of distracted driving.

Although these videos are hard to watch, they are important to understanding the reality of distracted driving and how deadly it can be. So if you are still taking the risk and texting while you drive, I suggest you watch one of the videos on Distracted.gov. Perhaps they can be your wake up call.

This is the video of Eric Okerblom’s parents. Please watch and hopefully you will never pull out your phone while behind the wheel. Faces of Distracted Driving

Happy Easter Food Friday!

Category : Foodie Friday

This Sunday is Easter, which means many of you are preparing an Easter feast for your friends and family. But when you are planning the menu, you must take into account that children most likely will be guests of your parties. And if some of these children are picky, like me, then you will want to make something different to satisfy them.

from madeformums.com

These Easter Bunny Pizzas are fun for the kids to eat and they can even help make them too. Just let them add the toppings of their choices, and if they are older, they can even help cut the pastry.

Ingredients:

- Packet of ready rolled puff pastry (get as many as you need depending on how many kids you will be feeding)

- 1 tbsp milk

- 4 tbsp red pest

- frozen peas and sweetcorn mix (you can use any vegetable you desire but these were recommended in the recipe)

- your preference of cheese grated

- 1-2 slices of ham or turkey shredded

- baking sheet

Now it’s time to make the bunnies!

1. preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Make a bunny template with paper. Unroll the pastry dough and use a small sharp knife to cut around the bunny template you created.

2. Move the bunny shaped dough to the sheet and brush with milk. Bake for 5-10 minutes, until they are golden brown and risen.

3. Once they look perfect to you, take out and let cool. Next spread the peso on each bunny, add the vegetables and meat. Sprinkle cheese over it all and bake for 5 minutes or until the cheese has melted.

These very simple Easter Bunny Pizzas will be delicious and will surprise all your guests with how cute they are. I hope you enjoy and Happy Easter!

Make Sure You Know Your First Aid For This Year’s Easter Party

Category : Life and Health, Life and Health Insurance, Safety Tips, Special Days, Tips

Easter is almost here, which means fun in the sun for kids and adults. If you are planning on having an Easter party, the changes of you have multiple kids running around is very likely. I know that is how it goes when it comes to our Easter parties. The more kids there are, the more chances someone could get hurt. Most likely these injuries will be very minor, but as your California Health Insurance Agent, we want to make sure you know the common first aid tools for these common injuries.

1. Bloody Nose: If a child, or an adult, should wind up with a bloody nose there are some actions you should take immediately. First, lean slightly forward and pinch your nose just below the bridge. Make sure not to lean the head back to ensure no blood will be swallowed. Maintain this pressure for about 10 minutes to help stop the bleeding.

2. Something foreign in eye: First, try to dislodge the particle by blinking several times. If this does not help rinse the eye out by holding it under running water while holding the lid open.

3. Someone touched the hot stove and got burned: If you, your guest, or a child gets burned during the holiday festivities first thing to do is run the burned area under cool water or apply a wet cloth to the burned area. If it is a first degree burn, skin is red, or a second degree burn, slight blistering, a loosely wrapped bandage will help keep it protected. If it looks like a third degree burn, broken or blackened skin, call your doctor immediately or go to the hospital.

4. Poisoning: With so many children running around, one may be able to find a poisonous substance that you forget to hid away, or a guest/child could get an animal bit or sting they are allergic to. If one of these thing should happen it is important to call 911 or use an Epipen to control the allergic reaction.

5. An open wound: If someone at your Easter party should cut, scrape, puncture, or break skin it is important to treat it immediately and properly so it does not become infected. First is to place a piece of sterile gauze on the injured area and apply pressure. For minor injuries, wash with soap and water, then cover with neosporin or another antibiotic ointment then cover with a band aid or bandage.

With these tips from your California Health Insurance Agent, you can have peace of mind knowing you can handle a minor injury should one occur at your Easter Party.

Easter is just around the corner, which means families are ordering the honey baked ham, filling the eggs for the hunt, and waiting for the Easter bunny to arrive. In our house, we do a big Easter dinner with friends and family, and dinner is never over until desert comes out. It is an Easter tradition to make a bunny cake for this holiday and this cake is so fun to make with your child (or your friends child).

This Foodie Friday I am going to share how to make this fun bunny cake. The cooks of this beautiful cake are John Peakes’s wife, Laura Peakes, and his best friends daughter, Riley Young. So I want to thank them so much for making this beautiful cake.

Ingredients:

2 round cake pans

2 boxes of cake mix and the ingredients it asks for: we did white cake but you can do any flavor

White icing and any other colored icing

Candy for decorating: we used colored Junior Mints, candy wafers, and sweetened coconut

Procedure:

Bake the cakes according to the cake box directions

Next, cut two ears out of one cake. The piece you are left with is the bow tie.

this is the pattern you follow for the cakes

Once the cake is cut, assemble it on a flat tray to get ready for icing.

Now it is time to decorate! Ice the cake, sprinkle with coconut, and add the candies to make the face.

Once you have decorated it to your liking, you have a perfect bunny cake for your Easter dinner. A simple recipe that is fun for adults and kids! Check back next week to watch the video of Laura and Riley making the Easter Bunny cake! Happy Early Easter and Food Friday from John E. Peakes Insurance Agency!

Prevent Your Children From Dog Bites With These 8 Safety Tips

Category : Life and Health Insurance, Tips

Dogs are a man’s best friend. For me, this statement rings very true.If you have been following me on the John E. Peakes Insurance Agency’s social networking sites then you will have seen multiple pictures and posts about my dog Winston. As much as I love him and as much as I want to pet every dog I see on the street, I know that all animals can be unpredictable. We have to remember it is in their nature to protect themselves when feel threatened. But some dogs are more prone to be agile than others. Yesterday a 2-year-old boy was attacked by a pit bull while in the care of his babysitter. After the attack the babysitter threw the dog out of the home and he is now wondering the streets of Oxnard with Animal services looking for him.

The young boy sustained multiple bites but nothing life threatening, and once the dog is found, it will be placed into quarantine.

According to americanhumane.org, there are approximately 4.7 million dog bites in the U.S. each year and 82% of dog bites treated in the emergency room were for children under 15 years old. As your CA health insurance agency we want you to know if you have a dog in your home or if your children are exposed to dogs on a regular basis, it is really important for your and your children to be educated on animal safety precautions.

1. Don’t treat dog unkindly.

2. Don’t bother a dog when he/she is paying with toys, eating or sleeping.

3. Don’t approach a dog you don’t know.

4. Always remain calm.

5. Recognize your pets mood.

6. Avoid the face and head when petting dogs.

7. Explain to your children that animals are often startled by loud, high pitched screams, noises or sudden movement.

8. Keep food dishes out of reach of your young children.

Remember, animals can be an important member of your family, but they must also be treated with respect. And make sure you have California Health Insurance in the event your child does receive a bit from a dog.
