This May, Dedicate Yourself To Spreading Awareness About Skin Cancer Detection & Prevention

Category : Life and Health, Life and Health Insurance, Month's special, Peakes Insurance, Safety Tips

May is National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. Although skin protection is something that should be practiced year round, this month is dedicated to increasing others awareness of the importance of skin care, prevention, early detection and treatment.

Skin cancer is on the rise, with more than 3.5 million skin cancer diagnosed per year in more than 2 million people. This makes me wonder, when I am watching the young teens and adults still entering the tanning bed if they are aware of how common skin cancer has become, or if they don’t care. Whatever the answer it, this type of cancer is as dangerous as any other type, and is known to spread very quickly. As this month continues, the hope is that more people take proper care of their skin, not only when outside, but by getting their skin regularly for any abnormal skin cells. According the University of MIchigan Skin Cancer website, early detection of skin cancer increases your survival rate by 97%, without early detection it drops significantly to 15%.

In order to spread this awareness to all of you, your health insurance Ca agency wants to share the proper steps to prevent skin cancer.

1. Seek shade when needed. The sun’s rays are the strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This means it is during these hours that you must be extra careful with your skin and applying sunscreen if you are outside.

2. Wear protective clothing. When outside by the pool, at the beach, gardening or any other outdoor activity wear a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. If it is not too warm, a long sleeve shirt or pants will also add extra protection from the sun’s rays.

3. Apply a broad spectrum and water resistant sunscreen. The lowest number of sunscreen you should use is SPF 30. Most people are unaware that not all sunscreens are a like; make sure your sunscreen is a “broad spectrum” type because it offers protection from both ultraviolet A and B rays. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours to make sure it is constantly working.

4. Be extra careful near water, snow and sand. These three things reflect and intensify the rays from the sun, which mean they will have a strong effect on your skin.

5. Avoid tanning beds. This may seem like a no brainer, but I am amazed by how many people still use tanning beds. The beds give off ultraviolet light, just like the sun, but at a closer distance. They are very dangerous and can cause wrinkling.

This month, please help us, your health insurance Ca agency, to spread the work about skin cancer  awareness and prevention. John E. Peakes Insurance Agency want you to tell your friends, family, co-workers, etc. about this and encourage early detection through self exams and doctor visits. You have the chance to protect yourself, why not do it?

If One Strikes, Are You and Your Family Prepared?

Category : Earthquake Insurance, Home Insurance, Peakes Insurance, Safety Tips

This morning a 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck one mile west of San Juan Capistrano and caused a small temblor that was reported to be felt in Costa Mesa, Anaheim, Huntington Beach, and Rialto California. Even though this was a smaller earthquake, compared to the devastating ones we have seen recently, it is still a reminder that we should all be prepared and have a plan should one hit California.

As your California Earthquake Insurance agency, we want you to ask yourself if you and your family are prepared if an earthquake takes place. Do you have a safety procedure in place? Do you have a disaster safety kick ready? Have you obtained California earthquake insurance to protect your house from any damages it may get as a result of the big shake?

If you answered no to any of these questions, and you are interested in becoming more prepared, check out these tips from your California earthquake insurance agent:

1. Create an emergency plan: know where the safe exits are, where you will meet should you be separated, what your children do if they are in school and an earthquake occurs, pick safe places in your room and practice your plan.

2. Make sure your home is earthquake secure: keep a flashlight and sturdy shoes for easy access, bolt and brace water heaters and gas appliances to wall studs, hang heavy items like pictures or mirrors away from beds and couches, brace overhead light fixtures, and make sure all bookshelves and tv stands are secure.

3. Make sure you know how to shut off the gas valves in your home.

4. Make an emergency kit: this should contain essential food, water, and other supplies for at least three days, make sure the kit is in a designated place everyone knows about, walking shoes, flashlight, can opener and other important object you will need. Don’t forget to add a first aid kit, battery powered radio, and a large supply of batteries for the radio and flashlight.

5. Make sure you have California earthquake insurance: there is a common misconception that home insurance covers earthquake damage, but this will need to have its own policy.

Unlike other natural disasters, we can’t predict when an earthquake will strike, which is why it is so important to be prepared. As one of California’s leading independent insurance agencies, John E. Peakes Insurance Agency is able to give you and your family the best earthquake insurance coverage for your specific needs at the best rate possible. Our customers are part of our family, so we want you to be protected and prepared, we are here for you. Whether it be for California earthquake advice or any other questions you may have, our agents are here for you.

Category : Life and Health, Life and Health Insurance, Safety Tips, Special Days, Tips

Easter is almost here, which means fun in the sun for kids and adults. If you are planning on having an Easter party, the changes of you have multiple kids running around is very likely. I know that is how it goes when it comes to our Easter parties. The more kids there are, the more chances someone could get hurt. Most likely these injuries will be very minor, but as your California Health Insurance Agent, we want to make sure you know the common first aid tools for these common injuries.

1. Bloody Nose: If a child, or an adult, should wind up with a bloody nose there are some actions you should take immediately. First, lean slightly forward and pinch your nose just below the bridge. Make sure not to lean the head back to ensure no blood will be swallowed. Maintain this pressure for about 10 minutes to help stop the bleeding.

2. Something foreign in eye: First, try to dislodge the particle by blinking several times. If this does not help rinse the eye out by holding it under running water while holding the lid open.

3. Someone touched the hot stove and got burned: If you, your guest, or a child gets burned during the holiday festivities first thing to do is run the burned area under cool water or apply a wet cloth to the burned area. If it is a first degree burn, skin is red, or a second degree burn, slight blistering, a loosely wrapped bandage will help keep it protected. If it looks like a third degree burn, broken or blackened skin, call your doctor immediately or go to the hospital.

4. Poisoning: With so many children running around, one may be able to find a poisonous substance that you forget to hid away, or a guest/child could get an animal bit or sting they are allergic to. If one of these thing should happen it is important to call 911 or use an Epipen to control the allergic reaction.

5. An open wound: If someone at your Easter party should cut, scrape, puncture, or break skin it is important to treat it immediately and properly so it does not become infected. First is to place a piece of sterile gauze on the injured area and apply pressure. For minor injuries, wash with soap and water, then cover with neosporin or another antibiotic ointment then cover with a band aid or bandage.

With these tips from your California Health Insurance Agent, you can have peace of mind knowing you can handle a minor injury should one occur at your Easter Party.

We Can All Learn From This Tragic Story

Category : Life and Health, Peakes Insurance, Safety Tips, Tips

This morning, as I was scrolling through my personal Facebook page, a friend of mine had posted a story for everyone to read. This story really hit me hard, as it would anyone, and even further reminds me how important life is and taking care of what we have. I wanted to share this story with you, once again as a reminder of how dangerous fires are and to become an expert in fire safety in your home. Please, don’t let yourself be a victim of a household fire.

photo from angel-guide.com

The following true story is written by  Rahul George and was posted on Facebook this morning 1/26/11

A couple lost their 25 year old son in a fire at home on June 4th. The son who had graduated with MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison two weeks earlier had come home for a while. He had lunch with his dad at home and decided to go back to clean up his hostel room. His father told him to wait, to meet his mother, before he went back for a few days. He decided to take a nap while waiting for his mom to come back home from work. Some time later their neighbors called 911 when they saw black smoke coming out of the house.

Unfortunately, the 25 years old died in the three year old house. It took several days of investigation to find out the cause of the fire. It was determined that the fire was caused by the laptop resting on the bed. When the laptop was on the bed cooling fan did not get the air to cool the computer and that is what caused the fire. He did not even wake up to get out of the bed because he died of breathing in carbon monoxide.

The reason I am writing this to all of you is that I have seen many of us and also our sons & daughters using the laptop while in bed. Let us all decide and make it a practice not to do that. The risk is real. Let us make it a rule not to use the laptop on bed with blankets and pillows around. Please educate as many people as you can.

This story not only shares the important message of home fires but knowing proper electrical safety, ie the laptop. Myself and John E. Peakes Insurance Agency hopes you will learn from this and share to protect your friends and family.

Truth: Dairy is Not The Best Source For Calcium Fact: It Can Be More Harmful Than Good

Category : Life and Health, Life and Health Insurance, Month's special, Peakes Insurance, Safety Tips, Tips, Uncategorized

I remember when I was young, every night at dinner time my would make me drink a big glass of milk and tell me it would help me grow strong bones. Since I can remember I have heard this said about dairy as a great source of calcium for people. When I hit 18 years old I was suddenly struck with the nutrition and environment blog that cause me to dive into all sorts of information. This information would prove so many things I group up thinking as false. One major misconception about nutrition is that diary is the best way to provide humans with calcium. So now that you know this truth you are probably thinking, if not dairy then what is? Well before I explain this little secret, I want to let you in on another one, dairy is not as good for you as you think.

If you take time to look at other animals, humans are the only ones who continue to eat dairy past their infant years. That is the first clue to slow down on the dairy. Second, much of the dairy Americans are eating is pumped full of hormones that are bad for our bodies and can cause negative affects for humans. Finally, to get proper absorption of calcium into your bones you need a sufficient amount of magnesium, which 75% of Americans do not get in their diet.

Now don’t get me wrong, humans do need a good amount of calcium in their diet, but there are many other ways to get it than dairy products. There are numerous amounts of plant based foods that are a great source of calcium and much better for your overall health. Also, dairy milk alternatives such as soy, coconut and almond milk will give you all the calcium you need. My favorite is Almond milk! Finally, don’t forget seeds and nuts supply the body with calcium.

So now that you know alternatives to eating dairy for your calcium  needs, kick the habit that so many American have fallen into: over consumption of dairy products. And make sure if you do eat some yogurt (which if you do I only recommend unsweetened Greek yogurt) make sure it is free of hormones. And make sure you keep up with your health with California Health Insurance form John E. Peakes Insurance Agency.

Harmful Chemicals In Your Canned Foods: BPA found in packaging products

Category : Eco Friendly, Life and Health, Life and Health Insurance, Peakes Insurance, Safety Tips, Uncategorized

In efforts to go green, many of us turned to using re-usable plastic water bottles instead of buying a new one when we needed to fill up. Then the news revealed that many of our waters bottles  contained a chemical called Bisphenol A, also known as BPA, that had harmful effects ofhumans. When the studies came out so did the new BPA free water bottles. I immediatly made the switch to glass and stainless steel bottles as a way for me to recycle and get my water without the harmful chemicals. I thought I was doing good until the other day I read an article stating there is BPA in canned goods. I am shocked, even though I should know better, that compaines would still use a chemical in their products that has been proven to be harmful.

According to environmentalleader.com, BPA is used in can linings and some hard clear plastic containers and is known to leach from the packaging into the food inside the container. Luckily there are companies out there that do not use BPA in their packaging. Although some of these may be more expensive than the other brands, it is well worth is to skip the consumption of the harmful chemical and save  your health and spend a couple more dollars.

Companies that do not use BPA in their packaging include:

1. Eden Organic

2. Native Forest

3. Vital Choice

4. Wild Planet

5. Oregon’s Choice Gourmet

Although there are some brands to choose from that do not have BPA in their packaging, many still do. The best option is to make and can your own food. Not only is it healthier but you can be positive that your food is BPA free. Some of my favorites are canning tomatoes and buying beans in bulk and cooking them at home. I choose to buy my fruits and vegetiables fresh and not canned. They are much better for you fresh anyways. John E. Peakes Insurance Agency wants to make sure you know how to be healthy and stay healthy. We hope that you can make the best decisions for youreslf and your loved ones.

Today I have already touched on the issue of safe driving during high winds, but what about safety tips for your home when high winds come roaring through? Well the time to know is now, since starting tomorrow Southern California is predicted to have 80 mph winds.

You may think that the gusty winds will only affect you on the roads but there are many other ways these winds can take their toll on your home. Follow these safety tips before the winds begin and your belongings will be protected.

1. Secure outdoor objects: Tie down trash cans, umbrellas, seat cushions, and any other objects in your yards that could become flying debris.

2. Flying debris: due to the high winds there is potential for flying debris so make sure to be aware of your surroundings.

3. Be aware of your car placement: if you notice your car is under or near a tree that could fall or drop branches onto your car, move it to an open area. In the event a tree branch does fall on your car, make sure you have the proper auto insurance to cover the damage.

4. Phone and power lines: high winds means chances of power lines falling in your area. If you do come across a power line, notify your electrical company immediately and do not touch the lines.

Have a Happy Heart: Foods That Can Cleanse Your Arteries and Be Tasty Too!

Category : Life and Health, Safety Tips, Tips, Uncategorized

This weekend I went out to breakfast with my boyfriend, his parents, their friends and their four year old daughter. When it came time to order the young girl’s breakfast, her mom ordered her chocolate chip pancakes. She reassured us that this was vacation and she was allowing her to have a treat on this particular day. Although I could fit in the category of “major health freak” I understood this and enjoyed knowing how happy this four year old would be to get a yummy treat on her vacation. But when the waitress brought out her pancakes I was horrified at what I saw. The plate she put down in front of the girl had a pancake the size of a medium pizza with chocolate spots all over. I could not believe this! Not only was it a waste of food, as I knew the little girl would never even make it through a fourth of the pancake, but that they would even offer a pancake that big. And I don’t mean offer it to just a kid, but to anyone! It is times like this that I am reminded of how unhealthy the majority of Americans are and how childhood obesity is continuously growing.

One of the major affects of a diet with constant “junk” food is high cholesterol. High cholesterol comes from too much LDL cholesterol, also known as “bad” cholesterol, circulating in the blood. This causes a slow build up on the inner walls of the arteries that feed blood to the heart and brain. This is obviously a bad thing and can lead to heart attacks and/or strokes. There are different ways to treat high cholesterol, but if your high numbers are due to poor diet, then the most obvious thing to do is change your diet. You can start by eating foods that have been known to clean your arteries, therefor, lower your cholesterol.

1. Avocado: Use this tasty food as an alternative to mayonnaise on your favorite sandwich or on its own as a healthy snack.

2. Whole Grains: You can get plenty of servings of whole grains in whole wheat breads, brown rice and oatmeal.

3. Olive Oil: Although this is high in fat, it is good fat that your body needs. Use on pasta, vegetables or to create a healthy salad dressing.

4. Asparagus: This vegetable works in the veins to release pressure and keep dangerous clots from building.

5. Pomegranate: This fruit contains antioxidants that protect the lining of the arteries from getting damaged. You can have this as a juice or even enjoy the seeds alone, just make sure not to spill because pomegranate does stain!

6. Turmeric: This is a wonderful spice that doubles as an anti-inflammatory. Inflammation is a major cause of hardening in the arteries.

7. Cinnamon: This is another power spice. Loaded with antioxidants, cinnamon can help reduce fats in the bloodstream preventing plaque build up in the arteries and lowering bad cholesterol.

The list continues on, but as you can see, eating healthy food that can help lower your cholesterol is healthy and yummy! John E. Peakes Insurance Agency knows that health is important, which is why we want to share this with you. If you can make  small healthy change, everyday, you will really begin to notice the improvements in your body and how you feel. So why not start today. Instead of that gigantic pancake, have some heart healthy oatmeal with berries and cinnamon. It is that easy! So make a change and feel great!
