Category : Life and Health, Month's special, Philanthropy, Tips

Did you know that March is National Red Cross Month? Well, if you didn’t , now you do. The Red Cross does so much for our community as wells as helping others beyond the U.S. boarders. One of the many things the Red Cross is known for is blood donations. If you have been keeping up on my blogs, then you already know that my attempt at donating blood was unsuccessful. I am still upset over it. But even though it may not be for me, I have already found other ways myself and John E. Peakes Insurance Agency, your Ventura County Insurance Agency, can help our community.

But maybe donating blood is for you. So why haven’t you done it yet. The process of donating blood is an easy one, and by giving an hour of your time and some of your blood, you could save multiple lives. So what is stopping you? In case you think your blood donation won’t go far, I want to share some interesting blood donation statistics and facts that may give you the extra push to donate.

Blood Donation Stats and Facts

  • Every 2 seconds someone in the United States needs blood
  • A single blood donation can help save up to three lives
  • Type O-negative blood is the universal blood type. This means it can be transfused to anyone who needs blood, regardless of their own blood type.
  • Type O blood is used during emergencies, when there is not time to determine the patient’s blood type. That is why it’s especially important that people with type O blood donate as frequently as possible.
  • 20% of blood recipients are children
  • About 60% of the population are eligable to donate blood, yet less than 4% do
  • At least 500 pints of blood must be collected every day to meet the needs of area patients

So there you go! See how important it is to donate blood if you are eligible? Many of our agents at John E. Peakes Insurance Agency, your Ventura County Insurance Agency, have donated blood. Now it is your turn. With these facts, how could you not? I may even give it another try. I want to do what I can to save a life, don’t you?

My Experience Donating Blood At The Red Cross

Category : Life and Health, Philanthropy

At John E. Peakes Insurance Agency we care about others and our community. On this quest to better and help our community, as well as others in the world, I have decided to do things to really make a difference in peoples lives. To start it off, I decided I was going to donate blood to the Red Cross. 24 years old may not be old, but many people have donated blood numerous amounts of times by this age. I am not one of them. I have never donated blood before and I have only had my blood drawn once. And the amount of blood you give for donation compared to a sample for your doctor is significantly different. I had been looking forward to donating since I signed up for the appointment. I was ready to save a life and really make a difference.

Here is a side note I forgot to mention, the one and only time I have had my blood drawn I fainted. I knew this was something that could happen again when donating, but listening to others who had donated, this seemed like a piece of cake. Well, to cut my story down, I didn’t make it. Yeah, I am sure you all have already figured that out. Although I was extremely nervous, and could feel my heart racing, I was determined to get through it. I laid on the table waiting for the doctor to help me, watching the two other people in the bus lay on their backs as bags filled up with red liquid. The space was much smaller than I had thought it would be and it was hard not to focus on the fact that blood was going to be pumped out of my body. So I took deep breaths and continued. The black ball was placed in my had, I squeezed to make the veins more visible, and in when the needle. OK, not so bad, actually. But the tiny pinching sensation that I thought would go away, wasn’t. And there was nothing to distract me other than squeezing the ball every five seconds. But as the minutes passed, that became tougher and worried that my body was becoming too weak. Suddenly a wave of nausea and heat overwhelmed me. I started to get the spins, when the doctor came over and looked at me. Asking me if I was alright, I disclosed to him that I felt sick to my stomach and I knew I had gone pale. He explained the needle must come out and I was going to be done.

I was so upset, and as embarassing as it is to admit, tears filled my eyes. I was letting myself down and letting someone who was going to need this blood down. I wanted to help save a life and I failed. Luckily my friend was there to bring me up when I was feeling so down. She explained how proud of me she was for even trying and that we must be thankful for the people who do donate. She was right. Although blood donating my not be for me, there are so many people who do it, and we must be thankful for them. And since I may not try to donate blood again, I am going to find other ways to help those in need. At the end of March I will be participating in Habitat for Humanity, helping rebuild a home for a family in need.

I will continue on this journey to help others and our community in any way I can. I am not giving up, but am learning about myself along this journey. So help me thank all of those who donate their blood, marrow, organs and so on to help save those in need.

Winter is an amazing time of year. It is the time we get to bundle up in our blankets and chunky sweaters, eat soup and drink hot chocolate while sitting by the fire. It is also a time, in many places, that the snow starts falling and people are enjoying the winter sports with friends and families. But with all this fun we can’t forget that winter brings drastic weather, illness, and more travel for the holidays. That is why, traditionally, there is a blood shortage during the winter months. It is also for these reasons that people are not donating as frequently.

Since it was first declared in 1970, January is known as National Volunteer Blood Donor Month. The Red Cross urges all of us to make blood donations a priority during the month of January.

John E. Peakes Insurance Agency Donating To The Community He Loves

Category : Life and Health, Philanthropy, Uncategorized

Philanthropy: the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to a good cause.

At John E. Peakes Insurance Agency we believe that a important part of life and business is to help others in need, less fortunate, or that continue to help the community. This is why John, the owner of John E. Peakes Insurance Agency, does his best to help all types of organizations. One of the places he donates to, which is very close to his heart, is called Livingston Memorial.

Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice provides services in a home environment for the sick, handicapped, elderly, terminally ill, and homebound. The amazing thing about Livinston Memorial, it is a non profit organization supported by its community, Ventura County. As someone who has lost a parent, I know the importance of having help if they become terminally ill, and John knows this as well since they were a big help when his mother became ill. Their knowledge and talent really makes this palace amazing.

John Peakes Jr. has been donation to Livingston Memorial for many years and is one of their “Memorial Angels”. He will continue to donate so they can continue to help the people of Ventura County. Thank you John for being such an amazing and supportive person, giving so that others can benefit.
