Living in Ojai, Save the Bears

Category : Community News, Local News, Uncategorized

Over my long Labor Day weekend, a couple of friends and myself went for a long hike in Ojai Valley. Throughout our hike we all noticed small “poops” filled with berries. Each one of us walked by them without much thought until we saw one, that was very obvious to all of us came from a bear. I know there are bears and other forms of wild life in Ojai but I never think of them bringing me any harm. Then I read an article in the Ventura County Star that addressed the issue of bears in the area. In the past the bears have not always been given the respect they deserve and it is important for us, living in the community, to understand what attracts bears and other wildlife so that we can do our best to keep them safe and away from our homes.

The first thing to do is to get educated on bear and other wildlife. According to the Ojai Wild Life League the first thing bears think about is food, that is was drive them close to us. So how do you keep your neighborhood and your home safe? First, eliminate and mask garbage and food odors. You can do this by using deodorized garbage bags or deodorize them yourself with unscented PinSol or cleaning supply. If you have used your BBQ, make sure to clean is thoroughly, including the drip pan. Put your garbage cans our on the morning of pick up instead of the night before. Or at least do it as near pick up time as possible. Don’t leave food in cars or your pets food outside.

There are many other important ways to keep your home protected from bears and we should all make sure we are educated on them. Although bears may seem scary, they are amazing creatures that we must protect and understand that we share our homes with them. To find out more visit www.savebears.org.

Picture yourself walking down the streets of Paris, Germany, or any other European city and you decide to stop into a local restaurant for a bit to eat. Well that is the experience that Executive chef and owner, Sven Hoffmann, had in mind when he began the Carmel Food Company. His restaurant provides the “mom and pop” feeling you might enjoy when traveling.

You Commute May Get Longer

Category : Local News, Uncategorized

Many people who are living in Ventura County do the daily commute into Los Angeles. Without traffic, the drive to L.A. can take anywhere from an hour to two hours. But during the peak hours, morning before ten and afternoon after five, the drive can take up to an hour longer. Whether you do the commute daily or just make the drive every now and then, the 405 is the most dreaded freeway into L.A. According to the Associated Press and Yahoo news, the Interstate 405 will be closed for road work starting in July. This shut down has the potential to cause an extreme traffic nightmare, which people are referring to as “car-mageddon”. According to county supervisor Zev Yaroslovsky, the best alternative for those who usually take the 405 is to avoid is completely.

You may be wondering why the county is closing the 405. The work is to add carpool lanes and make other improvements to the interstate. The Interstate is used by over 500,00 vehicles on a typical July weekend (Nguyen). I can only imagine that the amount of cars on it combined with the elements have created wear on the road.  The improvements will hopefully help all the drivers who use the 405 on a daily basis as well as those who are making a single trip to the city. Even when it seems like you are at a stand still in traffic, accidents CAN happen.

Monday Morning, Earthquake Strikes

Category : Earthquake Insurance, Local News

According to the LA Times Newspaper, this morning while many of us were sleeping, a 3.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in South Los Angeles. Luckily, the small earthquake did not create any immediate damage. Soon after the earthquake was felt, an aftershock of 1.5 magnitude was reported and again a 1.3 aftershock surged through Santa Monica west of the 405 Freeway.

Earthquakes are a part of nature but are also very scary. Luckily for the people of Southern California, the earthquake was small in comparison to the others that have recently destroyed many countries. But it is these small quakes that remind us how important Earthquake Insurance is and how we must protect our family and our belongings.

One of the main questions people have when looking at Earthquake Insurance is if it is a part of their homeowners policy. The answer to this is most of the time, no it is not. Just like flood insurance, earthquake insurance must be purchased separately. Earthquake insurance can be purchased to protect your home, mobile home, apartment (rent or owned) or Condo (rent or own). This type of policy is purchased to help you and your family recover in the event an earthquake hits. Some of the types of coverage that can be purchased are dwelling and coverage, personal property coverage, and/or additional living expenses/loss of use coverage.

It is important to always be prepared because life is unpredictable. Call John E. Peakes Insurance Agency today to find out how you can purchase California Earthquake Insurance today.

Ojai Residence Helping Those In Need

Category : Local News, Uncategorized

We have all heard about the tornadoes that are terrorizing people in many states and the photos don’t do justice to understand the pain and sadness these people affected by them are feeling. As a person living out of state, I am saddened by what I hear and see and only wish there was something I could do. I can only imagine there are many others that feel the same way. According to the Ventura County Star, the deadly tornadoes that took place in Missouri are putting strains on The American Red Cross. They are doing their best to solicit money they will use not only for housing tornado victims, but also help stimulate and rebuild their economy.

But the efforts go beyond the Red Cross and into Ojai, California. According to the Ventura County Star, Ojai resident, Diane Silvester, raised money through donations for Tornado victims in Joplin, Missouri. Sequoia Hamilton, another Ojai resident and founder of the Ojai Writers Conference, shipped the donations to the families who lost everything to the tornadoes.

I write about this to show how it takes only one person to help hundreds of people involved in disaster. And if one person can do it, think about what could happen when an entire community gets involved. If you are interested in finding out what you can do to help the victims of the tornadoes visit the American Red Cross website or contact the Ventura chapter of the American Red Cross. Remember, we can all work together to help each other.
