If One Strikes, Are You and Your Family Prepared?

Category : Earthquake Insurance, Home Insurance, Peakes Insurance, Safety Tips

This morning a 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck one mile west of San Juan Capistrano and caused a small temblor that was reported to be felt in Costa Mesa, Anaheim, Huntington Beach, and Rialto California. Even though this was a smaller earthquake, compared to the devastating ones we have seen recently, it is still a reminder that we should all be prepared and have a plan should one hit California.

As your California Earthquake Insurance agency, we want you to ask yourself if you and your family are prepared if an earthquake takes place. Do you have a safety procedure in place? Do you have a disaster safety kick ready? Have you obtained California earthquake insurance to protect your house from any damages it may get as a result of the big shake?

If you answered no to any of these questions, and you are interested in becoming more prepared, check out these tips from your California earthquake insurance agent:

1. Create an emergency plan: know where the safe exits are, where you will meet should you be separated, what your children do if they are in school and an earthquake occurs, pick safe places in your room and practice your plan.

2. Make sure your home is earthquake secure: keep a flashlight and sturdy shoes for easy access, bolt and brace water heaters and gas appliances to wall studs, hang heavy items like pictures or mirrors away from beds and couches, brace overhead light fixtures, and make sure all bookshelves and tv stands are secure.

3. Make sure you know how to shut off the gas valves in your home.

4. Make an emergency kit: this should contain essential food, water, and other supplies for at least three days, make sure the kit is in a designated place everyone knows about, walking shoes, flashlight, can opener and other important object you will need. Don’t forget to add a first aid kit, battery powered radio, and a large supply of batteries for the radio and flashlight.

5. Make sure you have California earthquake insurance: there is a common misconception that home insurance covers earthquake damage, but this will need to have its own policy.

Unlike other natural disasters, we can’t predict when an earthquake will strike, which is why it is so important to be prepared. As one of California’s leading independent insurance agencies, John E. Peakes Insurance Agency is able to give you and your family the best earthquake insurance coverage for your specific needs at the best rate possible. Our customers are part of our family, so we want you to be protected and prepared, we are here for you. Whether it be for California earthquake advice or any other questions you may have, our agents are here for you.

Category : Home Insurance, Peakes Insurance

Do you have a vacant home or leaving town for a while leaving your home empty? If you do, then you know how stressful it can be knowing a home you own is vacant. But don’t worry, there are some things you can do to help keep your home secure and safe making you feel at ease just like having great home insurance.

First thing to do it make it look occupied. You can do this by purchasing timers and set your lamps on and off at various times. Another thing to do is hire a lawn service to come by your home to take care of the landscaping. The fresh cut grass and kept lawn so there is no overgrowth, which could potentially attract burglars.

Second, contact people you trust. If you are friends with your neighbors ask them to keep an eye on your home. Make a list of numbers for them to call if needed. Make sure to ask the person watching your home to pick up your mail too. Piled up mail will let everyone know you are not home.

Third, make sure all your doors and windows are securely locked. And if you have a security system, make sure it is armed.

Fourth is to cover any entrance to the home other than a door or window. If you have a doggy door or a chimney, make sure to cover them as to keep out any animals or burglars.

Making Changes To Your Home? Ask These Questions First To Make An Eco-Friendly Home

Category : Home Insurance, Peakes Insurance, Tips, Uncategorized

For about 4 months now, my boyfriend and I, have been waiting to find out if a house we want will be ours. Short sales can take a long time, which means it gives us a lot of time to think about the changes we want to make to the house. For the most part, the house is perfect, but the kitchen is the one room that needs remodeling. We also go back and forth whether to take out the carpet in some of the rooms and change them to hard wood. As we are doing all this thinking, I keep reminding my boyfriend that I want to make these changes in the most sustainable way. That means using “green” products and making our home more efficient to save the planet and save us money, like we do by saving on our California Home Insurance policy. It may take a little more work to make your home more Eco-friendly, but the first step is knowing what the right questions to ask your contractor are before the construction begins.

The following are a list of questions to ask your contractor when trying to build a “green” home.

1. Are the building materials Eco-friendly? Recycled content building materials are a great choice for home changes. Choices like recycled plastic, recycled carpet, and recycled glass for counter tops are great choices. Renewable materials, like cork and bamboo, are also great options.

2. Are the building materials non-toxic? Using products in your home that contain or have been treated with toxic chemicals are not only harmful to the environment, but also to your family. Instead of the toxic materials use paints, primers, sealers etc with low or no VOCs.

3. Can we reconstruct, rather than demolish?  Reconstructing, rather than demolishing, can help you salvage and reuse the origional materials. This will not only cut down on waste but also can save you money!

4. Are locally made materials available? When a product is made local it will have a shorter distance to travel to get to your home. This reduces the air pollution emitted during transportation.

5. Are the materials used durable? The longer a material lasts, the less amount of waste you produce, meaning the materials are essentially Eco-friendly.

7. How do I maintain the new products in the material to ensure they last longer? Make sure you are aware if there are any special instructions to preserve the new additions to your home.

8. Do the Eco-friendly materials have other benefits? Sustainable products are not only great for the environment but they have other benefits as well. Some benefits are getting efficient heating and cooling systems. Find out about any potential money savings the products have too by using less electricity or water among other things.

At John E. Peakes Insurance Agency we not only care about saving our customers money on their California home insurance but we also want to save the environment. If you are interested in having an Eco-friendly house, make sure to ask these questions in the beginning to make sure the process starts on the right foots.

Have You Considered Insurance For Your Engagement Or Wedding Ring?

Category : Home Insurance, Peakes Insurance, Renters Insurance, Tips, Wedding Insurance

The other night I went out for a girls night dinner with some of my good friends. As we all sat talking and laughing their diamond engagement rings and wedding rings were blinding me, reminding me I was the only unmarried one in the group tonight. Sure not all my friends are married, but some are, and the more time goes on the more weddings I will be going to. Now I am not selling myself short, sure I will get married, but just not yet and the tough decision of picking out the perfect engagement ring is a decision I am not ready to make. What I can say, is that all my friends who are married, have made the wise decision to get insurance coverage for their rings.

When you think about how much money is spent on this tiny object, you better hope you have added protection in the event it is lost, stolen, or damaged. So what is engagement or wedding ring insurance. This type of insurance is an extension of your renters insurance or homeowners insurance policy. Since renters and home insurance only covers up to a certain dollar value; Expensive items, like an engagement ring, will need extra coverage. At John E. Peakes Insurance Agency we can take care of all the insurance details. Just give one of our agents a call today and let us work with you to get your the best coverage on this symbol of love.

Saving The Planet Is As Easy As Saving On Homeowners Insurance

Category : Home Insurance, Peakes Insurance, Tips, Uncategorized

Americans are notorioius for overconsumption and being extremely wasteful. These       habits of ours are having negative effects on the planet we live on. But did you know       reducing the amount of waste you and your family produce is just as easy as saving on   your California Homeowners Insurance form John E. Peakes Insurance Agency? Well it is, and we want to provide you with easy ways to accomplish waste reductions and help imporve the planet all at the same time.

1. Limit Lawn Size: lawns can be time consuming and money hungry. Not only does a larger lawn mean more water usage, which is hard on our planet, but also can increase your ultilite bill as well. The way to fix this is to plant a lawn only where it will be used for play time with the kids or entertaining. You can also find “foe” lawns that can take the place of real lawn that look much better than the astroturf lawns your gandparents may have had. Other options are replacing unused lawns with creative shrubs, trees, patios etc. that will not be so water consuming and produce waste.

2. Water Efficiently: Over watering is very unneccesary and wasteful. It promotes rapid growth, which leads to more yard waste. Simple ways to avoid overwatering is to install a drip system or a low output sprinkler system. You can also water each plan individually if time allows.

3. The Type of Plant Matters: Plant water efficient, low maintenance, and indigionous to your area plants. This will decrease the amount of water necessary to keep plants alive and less maintenance, such as pruning.

4. Improve Soil: Good soil is vital to having successful healthy plants. You can have healthy soil by adding organic matter to your soil. The best way to do this is by composting, and once the composted material has broken down, add it to your soil. This adds great neutrients to your soil.

5. Prune Conservatively: Watch how your trees, shrubs, and hedges respond to pruning. Only prune when when plants are dead or have damaged limbs. Excessive pruning will create uneccesary yard waste.

There are so many easy ways to learn green practices. They will not only benefit your home but will benefit the earth. They are fun and creative ways, which will also really save you money in the long run. Saving money is what we pride ourselves on, which is why we want to save you money on your California Homeowners Insurance.

Trick-or-Treat: How to avoid the trick and keep your home safe

Category : Holiday Insurance, Home Insurance, Safety Tips, Uncategorized

Halloween marks the beginning of all the fun holidays for the next four months. What great beginning! A h0liday that allows you to carve pumpkins into art, dress up in costumes, and fill up on candy… who could ask for more? The other night, I spend time with my girlfriends carving pumpkins in the spirit of Halloween. When I got home on Saturday morning I found that my pumpkin, along with my neighbors pumpkin’s, had been smashed in the street.

Once I got over the frustration that someone had smashed my pumpkin, I did some research and found some very interesting statistics related to Halloween on Intouch.com. Did you know the most common types of crime on Halloween, from most common to least, is theft, destruction and property damage, assault, and burglary. I guess I never really thought that the hoodlum goblins and gooles would be vandalizing homes but they are. So what happens if you and your family spend time decorating your home, carving pumpkins to put on the porch, and putting bowls of candy for trick-or-treaters out and those same goblins and gooles decide to target your home? Well I hope you have home insurance.

Here is a scenario. Some kids are bored on Halloween and they decide to take your pumpkins and smash them on your porch, drop them on the hood of your car, throw eggs at your windows, and spray paint your door. Well who is going to cover it? If you have home insurance than your policy will cover it. Most home insurance policies cover vandalism. This will help you fix your car, windows and repaint the spray paint that has stained your doors.

John E. Peakes Insurance Agency wants to make sure your home is protected, not only by offering affordable home insurance policies, but also by giving tips to keep your home safe this Halloween. The following tips are provided by Shine.yahoo.com:

1. Light up your home: a fully lit home will fend off any Halloween hoodlums that wants to vandalize your home. Appropriate lighting will also illuminate a safe path for the pleasant trick-or-treaters to follow on the way to your front door.

2. Install/reactivate motion lighting: This is something that you should have on your house year around. Motion lights are a great way to protect your house everyday and keep, not only vandals, but burglars from targeting your home.

3. Hide the cans: put your trash cans out of site, it would be a rude awakening to walk outside the day after Halloween and trash has been dumped all over your yard.

4. Bring in the pumpkins: bringing the pumpkins in before you turn of the lights and go to bed will keep vandals from smashing them all over your home.

Making sure your home is protected will allow you to have a great Halloween! Trick-or-Treat!!!

This issue would fall under homeowners insurance policies. This type of insurance covers the structure of your home, replacement costs, personal possessions, living expenses in case of a disaster, and liability. Make sure to socialize your pet. This is very important to do when they are puppies. This will cause them to be at east around humans of all ages as well as other animals. This also helps them handle situations when they are around large groups.

Train your dog. Teach them the basic commands and avoid promoting aggressive behavior such as wrestling.

Neuter your pet. Neutered dogs are less likely to bite.
