If One Strikes, Are You and Your Family Prepared?

Category : Earthquake Insurance, Home Insurance, Peakes Insurance, Safety Tips

This morning a 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck one mile west of San Juan Capistrano and caused a small temblor that was reported to be felt in Costa Mesa, Anaheim, Huntington Beach, and Rialto California. Even though this was a smaller earthquake, compared to the devastating ones we have seen recently, it is still a reminder that we should all be prepared and have a plan should one hit California.

As your California Earthquake Insurance agency, we want you to ask yourself if you and your family are prepared if an earthquake takes place. Do you have a safety procedure in place? Do you have a disaster safety kick ready? Have you obtained California earthquake insurance to protect your house from any damages it may get as a result of the big shake?

If you answered no to any of these questions, and you are interested in becoming more prepared, check out these tips from your California earthquake insurance agent:

1. Create an emergency plan: know where the safe exits are, where you will meet should you be separated, what your children do if they are in school and an earthquake occurs, pick safe places in your room and practice your plan.

2. Make sure your home is earthquake secure: keep a flashlight and sturdy shoes for easy access, bolt and brace water heaters and gas appliances to wall studs, hang heavy items like pictures or mirrors away from beds and couches, brace overhead light fixtures, and make sure all bookshelves and tv stands are secure.

3. Make sure you know how to shut off the gas valves in your home.

4. Make an emergency kit: this should contain essential food, water, and other supplies for at least three days, make sure the kit is in a designated place everyone knows about, walking shoes, flashlight, can opener and other important object you will need. Don’t forget to add a first aid kit, battery powered radio, and a large supply of batteries for the radio and flashlight.

5. Make sure you have California earthquake insurance: there is a common misconception that home insurance covers earthquake damage, but this will need to have its own policy.

Unlike other natural disasters, we can’t predict when an earthquake will strike, which is why it is so important to be prepared. As one of California’s leading independent insurance agencies, John E. Peakes Insurance Agency is able to give you and your family the best earthquake insurance coverage for your specific needs at the best rate possible. Our customers are part of our family, so we want you to be protected and prepared, we are here for you. Whether it be for California earthquake advice or any other questions you may have, our agents are here for you.

Monday Morning, Earthquake Strikes

Category : Earthquake Insurance, Local News

According to the LA Times Newspaper, this morning while many of us were sleeping, a 3.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in South Los Angeles. Luckily, the small earthquake did not create any immediate damage. Soon after the earthquake was felt, an aftershock of 1.5 magnitude was reported and again a 1.3 aftershock surged through Santa Monica west of the 405 Freeway.

Earthquakes are a part of nature but are also very scary. Luckily for the people of Southern California, the earthquake was small in comparison to the others that have recently destroyed many countries. But it is these small quakes that remind us how important Earthquake Insurance is and how we must protect our family and our belongings.

One of the main questions people have when looking at Earthquake Insurance is if it is a part of their homeowners policy. The answer to this is most of the time, no it is not. Just like flood insurance, earthquake insurance must be purchased separately. Earthquake insurance can be purchased to protect your home, mobile home, apartment (rent or owned) or Condo (rent or own). This type of policy is purchased to help you and your family recover in the event an earthquake hits. Some of the types of coverage that can be purchased are dwelling and coverage, personal property coverage, and/or additional living expenses/loss of use coverage.

It is important to always be prepared because life is unpredictable. Call John E. Peakes Insurance Agency today to find out how you can purchase California Earthquake Insurance today.

Earthquake Insurance, Do You Have It?

There comes a time when we have to realize that natural disasters are a part of life and instead of ingnoring them, we must prepare for them. Like the saying, “always better to be safe than sorry.” Today I want to cover earthquakes. You may think that your homeowners policy covers earthquake damage, but this is not the case. Homeowners, renters, and condo policies do not cover this type of insurance. Although Earthquake insurance is something you must purchase separatly from you regular insurance, if you live in California this is an important thing to have. Think of how much you have invested into your home, it is probably one or your biggest financial assests. Earthquake insurance will protect that assets from the damages that could occur. Call John E. Peakes Insurance Agency today to find out about Earthquake Insurance. We want you to be safe as well as your home.

On the subject of preparing, I want to give everyone tips on how to be even more prepared in the event an earthquake hits:

Research earthquake hazard in your area. Secure the contents of your home to reduce the likelihood of damage and injury.

Plan where to meet after a disaster, if your home becomes unsafe. Pick a site outside your home and another outside the neighborhood that you can walk to.

Indentify an out-of-area phon contact that can coordinate information as your report your status.

Identify two escape routes out of your home and practice using them.

Make a disaster kit for each person in your household. Include prescription medicine, health insurance, eyeglasses, cash, radio, batteries, flashlight, a first aid kit, manual can opener, and food and water. Make sure you have supplies for your pets too.

When the earthquake starts be sure to get under a table if possible and hold on to it, or drop to a squat against a wall away from windows, cover your head with your hands and hold that positions until it’s safe to evacuate.
